FROM THE SPACE

A father and his son visited the Beijing Planetarium, where they reached out to touch the 680-kilogram Nandan Iron Meteorite that was left behind by a ‘visitor’ from space 500 years ago. As they explored the planetarium's collections and exhibitions, they learned about meteors streaking across the night sky, meteor fireballs traveling 30 times faster than bullets, and meteorites that hold the secrets of the solar system. Through this visit, they also found out that: sporadic meteors are ‘lonely travelers’ in space; meteor showers form when the Earth encounters streams of meteoroids; and those near-Earth objects, which once caused the extinction of dinosaurs, have now become targets of scientists' exploration. At the end, the son said he wanted to be a ‘guest of Earth’s guests.’ This journey of exploration not only let them gaze upon the beautiful starry sky and learn about many scientific facts but also forged a warm promise between that father and his son. This is the story of the solar system, and also an ode to our exploration.
